COLNES FOOTPATH ASSOCIATION WALK REPORTS
MARCH WALK - RIVER WALK, WIVENHOE
PICTURES BELOW OF THIS WALK

MARCH WALK REPORT

Wivenhoe is am attractive small town, very popular at weekends. The long main street leads down almost to the waterfront where until fairly recently Cooks Shipyard was sited, sadly now replaced by a housing complex under construction. I have read that in former times Wivenhoe had a prosperous trade building fast vessels both for the smugglers and those who pursued them!

There are some good walks in this area. It is possible to follow the River Colne right back to the Hythe at Colchester, but we walked in the opposite direction, as far as Alresford Creek. It was high tide and the river appeared silver, reflecting the sky. Brent geese were still in residence with a large flock in flight.

We followed the sea wall, passing the derelict Ballast Quay, where in bygone times sand and gravel was loaded onto barges,. Aggregate is still being extracted in this area and flooded pits are an attractive feature of the landscape.

With the imposing tower of Brightlingsea church in view we turned inland for a short stretch before retracing our steps along the sea wall back to Wivenhoe.

I find tidal rivers most fascinating and I would recommend the sea wall here as easy walking, even for the most unfit, with seats along the way for the weary. But be warned, Wivenhoe car park is small and is often full, as we found out!

Sarah and Robin did a grand job leading this walk and I can’t wait to return, this time to linger on a summers evening and perhaps enjoy some refreshment on the quayside.

The next walk will take place on April 5 th
meeting at the Discovery Centre, Great Notley at 2pm. It will be a walk in two parts, exploring the country park which will be suitable for wheel chairs and buggies, with the option of extending the walk for the more able bodied. There are facilities at this venue including toilets and a café, and there is a charge of £2 per car to park. Leaders will be Leslie and Dorothy in her electric buggy. Telephone 01787 222040 for further information. For details of the Colnes Footpath Association and forthcoming monthly walks please visit: www.adventure-trek.co.uk

All are welcome.

FEBRUARY WALK
We have had a true taste of winter this year and our walk, early in the month saw the start of a very cold spell. In spite of a biting wind I counted 30 eager walkers and it was good to welcome some new faces.
Starting from Bridge Street we followed the riverside path towards the meadows. This should be an attractive area, but I was horrified at the litter and junk that is strewn behind the Broton trading estate, it was truly a tip.
We pressed on to the meadows, crossing the river by the footbridge at Box Mill. In the 1700’s two flour mills were erected here, a windmill which was abandoned in 1882 after it was damaged in a storm and a watermill which survived until 1926. The house at the top of the lane was built as a school in 1861, but closed after only 17 years when St Andrews school in Colchester Road was opened. Crossing Hedingham Road we proceeded up the track to Wash farm and followed the path towards Fitz John’s Grove, a high point with good views back towards Halstead.
Crossing the Sudbury Road at Constantine Cottages we entered Star Stile Lane, passing Halstead Cricket Ground before following a path which skirts a housing estate and then heads in the direction of Colne Engaine. This is a popular area for walking and it was good to see family groups enjoying some fresh air .Leaving the Colne Engaine Road we turned back towards Halstead. It was in this area we experienced a mini blizzard, with polystyrene snow blotting out the landscape. Skirting the Blue Bridge Industrial Estate we crossed Colchester Road to return to the town via the river fields.
Considering the amount of rain that had fallen in recent weeks the paths were not bad. We had kept up a fairly brisk pace and it was good to be back, but even better to have walked! Thank you, Nancy.

Lets hope spring is on its way for our next walk which is on March 1
meeting at 2pm at Wivenhoe Town Car Park. Its a few years since we did a walk in this area, the
Colne is tidal and the woods interesting so do make the effort to come along, car sharing where possible. All are welcome. Sarah and Robin will lead and can be contacted on 01206 531547 for further information.
